What political term was coined as a result of the publicity surrounding the cartoon map? In 1812, the then-Governor of Massachusetts, Elbridge Gerry, signed a bill that re-districted Massachusetts to benefit his Democratic-Republican Party. When mapped, one of the contorted districts in the north-shore area was said to resemble the shape of a salamander. Subsequently the portmanteau Gerry-mander appeared with the political cartoon of a map that would help to catapult the word into the vernacular as the go-to term to describe district-shape manipulation for partisan gain.

How many of his own plays did Shakespeare publish? None. William never published any of his plays. We read his plays today only because his fellow actors John Hemminges and Henry Condell, post-humously recorded his work as a dedication to their fellow actor in 1623, publishing 36 of William’s plays. This collection known as The First Folio is the source from which all published Shakespeare books are derived and is an important proof that he authored his plays..
